you need to look at the history around the time of the romantic period. Romanticism does not mean romantic. Poe is American Gothic. The "patron saint to the practitioners of the detective story". At the time in American history a lot was going on in Religion as well as democracy that would have influenced his work. Slavery, Pre civil war issues and religous revivals and indifference. Plus the fact that he had severe depression. A disease that was not yet known. Look at the religous characteristics and depression of his work.
