16th & 17th century perception of mental illness

How did the general public, as well as the medical profession, view mental illness in the 16th and 17th century? I am doing a paper on "The Monk," using a modern obsessive-compulsive theme.

Start with Gregory Zilboorg's A History of Medical Psychology, which is an authoratitive source on the history of mental illness. Then search for other books in the same subject cateogry.
