High Powerd Competition rifles (were can I buy one)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread

Im fixing to start shooting in rifle competitions and I need a rifle that can really get out there and hit targets. I will be using it for hunting some. I use a .270 Winchester (130grain) and a .30-06 Winchester (180grain) and these guns will not get out to 800yds with enuf balistics to hit a small target with some windage and high humidity. Im looking for a Remington 700, .338 lupa magnum (hopefully AR-30 version)or a M40A1 so if any of you guys no were I could buy one of these please reply. If any of yall no were i can buy a really powerfull scope for around $300-$400 (If yall no were i can buy a Ilumated milidot scope please tell me)

If your looking for a good cheap long range scope check out SWFA Rifle scopes web site (www.riflescopes.com) and their Super Sniper scopes. They were built for a military contract and are well built. They come in fixed powers of 10x42, 16x42, and 20x42 with 30mm tubes and target knobs and are mil dot type. They sell for $299 to $399 nothing comes close for the features they have. They have been tested by a number of Sniper type people and some of their reviews are on the web site. Good Luck, Bill.

Just two cents from an old(er) Navy High Power shooter. If your getting into NRA "High-Power" starting out with a bolt gun is a hard road to go, can't use a scope either. If your just looking at airing out at 1000yd targets 30-06, 308, and 300 Winmag are all good choices. The bigger/faster concept applies (more forgiving). 7mm RemMag has the best ballistic coeficient but bullets are a bit light for the long line. National Champs seem to think their OK though. As for scopes, even the low end stuff is good nowadays but if you want quality and repeatable adjustments (helps alot when the wind is flopping around) your going to pay for it. Just thoughts based on observation.

I'm just getting into target shooting myself. I am going with a 300 Rem ultra mag. You can do a ballistics comparison here. http://www.remington.com/ammo/ballistics/ballistics.htm also springfield armory makes some good illuminated scopes which are in that price range and go up to about 300 more.

Wolf, Your Winchester .30-06 is an excellent long range rifle. At least that caliber is. Is your Win. a M70? 30-06 has a wide range of projectile weights, and 173 grain would be ideal for 800-1000 meters. Good shooting Tippy
