spark plug removal??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CB550 : One Thread

Not sure if this has been addressed or not, but I went to change the plugs on my '75 CB550F yesterday and discovered that an 18mm deep socket doesn't want to fit down far enough to remove the two inner cylinder's plugs. Please don't tell me I have to buy a special sparkplug socket from Honda - I've already spent enough trying to get this bike running LOL! So, is that the case?

Your best bet would be to find an old tool kit from the bike, the one that has the funny tool for removing plugs and etc. with the hole in the side for a screwdriver (some actually have their own T-handle). A shop near me took one of these, and welded an old junky 3/8" drive socket on the back of it so they could use it with a ratchet- worked like a charm.

I have noticed that in a pinch, a generic 18mm deep well impact socket will work- the generic impact sockets for whatever reason are of a thinner wall than the good Craftsman ones I have, and it will get down in there and get the plug out.
