Fuel Tank Welding

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Resistance Welding : One Thread

I have a 550 gallon used fuel oil tank I want to weld a new threaded bung to. I was wondering if anybody has any experience with this situation or has any references for info. I understand this is a potential deadly job if not done properly and should be done by someone with experience, but on the other hand I have the equiptment and prefer to do it myself. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Brent

Sorry, but this question is outside the parameters of this bulletin board.

I,m in a similar situation and find it weak that it,s outside of the parameters of this web site. Not suprising in this day and age of insurance driven "safety isues". One day we wont be able to wipe our ass without the appropriate insurance. My sujestion on doing the weld is firstly obviously your safety. The job does happen at the weld shops and if you follow the right procedures there probably is,nt any reason why you can,t DIY. I,d start by completly draining the tank, then washing it our with a detergent(dishwashing liquid works a treat)thoroughly.Empting the tank and letting it dry over 2 days would also then be my recommendation. This of course is only my opinion and is to be attempted only by suitably competent tradespeople.

To do this properly, follow these simple steps. 1 Drain 2 open all fittings and orifices 3 throughly wash the inside, use a product designed for petro imulsion, do not use dish soap, as the oil saturates itself in the steel. 4 after the wash, let it vent for a few days. 5 close all openings, except for one, aquire a k bottle of Co2. affix a hose from the bottle with a reg attached and open the Co2, let it fill completely. 6 make sure the area to be welded is completely free of contaminates. 7 insure that you're welder is set on the right setting. 8 Begin to weld the bung, good luck!! 9 If it dose explode, you wont have to worrie about filling it with oil.
