What was Poe's definition of a short story?

You will find the perfect answer in Poe's review of Hawthorne's "Twice-Told Tales" (1842), easily available; he explained therein: the kind of complete narrative (fiction-, i.e. imaginative) prose-writing you can read during one sitting (not exceeding one hour). He gave too the essential rules of composition for such short works. Yours sincerely, Raven's Shade (Belgium).
