H.E.I distributor, timing???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Pontiac GTO : One Thread

I was wondering if anybody could tell me what initial timing and full timing should be. It's a 69 400 ys , mild cam, headers. It seem to like lots of initial, like 14 degrees with vacuum adv. disconnect. Should the vacuum adv. be connected to ported vacuum. If so when checking total timing with it hooked up it's like 50 degress total at 3000rpm. That doesn't seem right to me. And i don't hear any detonation. It definitely runs better with more advance. Hot rod mag says 6 initial and about 32 total. Mine doesn't run well like this. Any help or parts ideas would be helpful. Thanks Steve

You need an adjustable advance.
