Short Summary of William Wilson

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

I have already read William Wilson but I don't quite understand all of it other than he is a schizo. What I would like to know is when did he start attending the school and what happened when William went to scare "William" in his bedroom? Why did he leave the school? If you could help explain these concepts to me that would be great. Thank you

Haunted by a doppleganger but typically the supernatural clarity is denied. certainly there is a pathology of identity in his head that comes to the point of a confused "self-murder" reversal. For Poe the maelstrom of fear often swallows the character into the feared fate he wildly and absolutely SEEMS to resist. The irony of resistance is typified in this tale in that he becomes the fear by his actions and enraged will. I think the effect of the story is very striking, yet the lack of objective clarity(since the narrator is too subjectively caught in the experience) is offensive to many people who want "the answers." For example the popular modern novel of the evil twin is fully explained at the end. For Poe it is not the shock of explanation but the catharsis of horror and consummation. The Tell-Tale Heart murderer and many others show that the explanation revelation is not the resolution of the story but the fall of the narrator-protagonist.
