I was getting some ideas the last few weeks on a railfanning trip down to Georgia and seeing some of the old main lines of the Georgia Railroad, the Savannah and Atlanta, The Central of Georgia and the listo goes on about some of the action we will see when we are down there. I am also looking for any historic structures such as the historic round house museum and any of the old train stations that could be still standing in Savannah. I have had this idea since mid July about doing this and I am also looking for places to stay around the area which could be close to say the former Central of Georgia main line.

Have you heard about Millen, GA and its railroad history. The Savannah Railway comes to Millen first before it goes anywhere. It is a big switching station that connects Savannah to Augusta, Macon, etc. There are several bed and Breakfast houses and Magnolia Springs State Park, which was Fort Lawton during the civil War, One of the largest prison camps, Is located between Millen and Augusta. It has beautiful campgrounds and Cottages. There is also several other historical sites including Civil war battle sites and a historical depot Magnolia Springs state Parks number is 478-982-1660. The Jenkins-Millen County Chamber of Commerce's number is 478-9825595. Hope that helps you. We are about 79 miles north from Savannah.

If you'll look in the Q&A Section titled "Structures and Facilities", there are at least two questions with answers ("Savannah & Charleston sites" and "Savannah structures") which will provide you a good deal of information on the Savannah area.

That being said, Savannah is a great railroad town with alot of history. For the CofGa fan, the Roundhouse Railroad Museum is a great place to start! The Savannah History Museum (located across the street from the Roundhouse) is built in the former CofGa station. Across the parking lot from that is the "Red Building" and the "Gray Building." Both of those held CofGa offices and are now owned by the Savannah College of Art & Design.

The Brinson Railway Freight Station is still standing on West Boundary Street, and the S&A building (originally built for the Midland RR) is at the corner of Old Louisville Road and Stiles Avenue.

The old Seaboard Air Line Freight station is about 1/2 mile west of the Roundhouse on Old Louisville Road.

Of course, Central Junction is located right beside the State Farmers Market on Highway 80.

I stiil have not heard from anyone on what some of the best sights are around the Savannah,GA area for me to look for when I coem down sometime next year. I am always looking for what specific railroad sights there are to see when I do come down there. I know I will definitely focus on the former Central of Georgia, Savannah and Atlanta and other great railroads that ran through the city of Savannah,GA. I hope somebody can give some ideas on places to stay around the area.
