Eating

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

Hello everyone. I have a 8 month nubian cross and now a one ear old pygmy (and she's a feisty one but I love her). They are eating the multi flora bushes and th esmall locust leaves on the trees and have just started eating the bark off the trees. Is this normal? They are both nice and plump and in very good health, BTW.

Very very normal behavior for goats! :-)

That is called "Browsing"...and are the types of food that goats love best. Given a choice, any goat would choose those trees and bushes over hay, or pasture any time. Unfortunately they also haven't a clue that they easily kill trees by stripping the bark off. :o/ **Beware of cherry and peach tree leaves- especially after a frost...- =poison** I used to let my four goats loose to eat up the multiflora rose, young poke stalks and huneysuckle vines. Then they decided to not come when I called them with grain in my hand anymore and I had to quite letting them loose.
