Report: Weapons Cache Found In D.C.-Bound Car

Authorities Think Suspect May Have Threatened White House

WASHINGTON -- Ten rifles and six handguns were found in a car seized in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C., today, according to a Secret Service source.

The Secret Service stopped a man Wednesday who they thought might have been trying to drive to the White House in a rental car armed with explosives.

Officials found Jeffrey Cloutier near the corner of 16th Street N.W. and Euclid Street N.W. in Washington. They cordoned off the area and evacuated homes.

The agency brought in bomb-sniffing dogs to see if there were explosives in the car. However, no explosives were found. But officers were seen taking guns from the car Cloutier drove.

Cloutier was arrested at the scene, but charges were not immediately available.

The agency put out an alert for Cloutier on Wednesday morning saying that he rented a 2001 Chevy Cavalier at an Enterprise rental agency near the Philadelphia International Airport.

The Secret Service said they had reason to believe that he was headed to the White House. According to the agency, Cloutier has no known terrorist links, but that they believe he may have threatened the president at one time. They also said they think he could have a mental illness.

The Secret Service said that Cloutier was believed to be in the company of a female and a dog when he rented the car. The woman and dog were with him when he was captured.
