There's gotta be something good happening today. Just not here. Tell us something good. Please.

Um, the work day is over in two hours? Sorry, that's all I've got today.

Nicole Kidman is singing in my ear about diamonds. I love both Moulin Rouge soundtracks. I'm listening to the 2nd one right now.

I am going to have a really good lunch today, I've decided. And I'm going to read my book in peace. And I'm on vacation starting day after tomorrow. And I am much less upset about a server outage than I would have been a month ago, thanks to you guys.

Well, my 2002 Windstar ( well, the company's actually, but I take care of it ) only needed some new wires, and not a new fuel pump as I feared, so it was only off the road until about noon, they had barbecued hot italian sausage and coleslaw for lunch today, I did not need a clean shirt after lunch, day one of the great stop smoking campaign is on track, minimal cravings, quitting smoking is a great excuse to be grumpy and mean to co-workers without any comeback, my laundry is up to date and not moldering in a pile, I have enough Petro Points to convert to Sears points and get enough gift certicates to buy the top range front loading washer, for only the cost of delivery, all my sisters and families are going home today so I have the house to myself for the first time in 2 weeks, until my mother arrives Monday. Take your pick, something in there has to fulfil your need for something good.

It's almost time to go home, it's almost the long weekend, my headache is finally gone!

Well, I've been so pissy in general (I blame Paxil, myself) and a bit, shall we say, confrontational with a co-worker who was stupid enough to cc me on an email complaining about me (heh) that I've been Officially Mollified with the offer of a newer, faster, better desktop that will slice, dice and mow the lawn. Not that I believe that I'll actually get it, mind you, but I've found that having a fit, assuming that you have one every twenty-five years, seems to work wonders around here. Plus I have a new car to drive home.

Toronto is looming ever closer, and that makes me happy. I get to fax in my ticket order tomorrow, which makes me happy. (Although Len better get off his ass and pick some movies soon, or else they're all going to be movies *I* want to see, and he'll just have to deal.)

My last meeting for the day is done, so as soon as I fill out some papers I can skip out early for the afternoon, which makes me happy.

I'm also full of TUS love this week -- Vanessa sent me the Firefly pilot, Philip sent Cocksuckers: the Musical, and I get to visit Amy and Blake a week from today. Whee!

Three day weekend, baby! Nothing but sleep, the Changing Rooms marathon on BBC America, a lot of reading and perhaps a trip to the Guggenheim since I get in for free. Woohoo!

A co-worker (bosses wife) bought all us girls lunch today at the grand opening of a cafe here. It was very good and the best part was dessert - cakes from a place called Yummies that is about 25 miles from here. There stuff is excellent!!!

Quad venti skim no-whip mocha. That is good. I've had two today, and nothing to eat. But I feel great! Wide awake and happy. I am not an addict, you just hush.

I expected this semester's ASL teacher to be an older woman who is rumored to be very tough. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be the very cute teacher from my first semester! Now I have all the motivation I need to attend every single freaking class. I don't mind staring intently at this guy for 1 1/2 hours twice every week. No, not at all. My only problem will be remembering to pay attention to what he's actually saying.

I have to learn to stop trying to parse Starbucks pseudo-Italian lingo. I always end up completely befuddled.

Charlotte cut her second tooth yesterday. Seeing two bottom teeth in a big, baby smile is just about the cutest thing.

My annual merit raise that went into effect last month has finally shown up on my paycheck, so I have retroactive money in my hand! It's so nice to see a paycheck fatter than any I have ever seen before.

I just got my member's newsletter about the addition to the Museum of Nature and Science's new astronomy atrium. It's going to be four floors, instead of the rest of the museum's three, so that the mountain view will be much improved, Pike's Peak to Long's Peak, and this mythical view will be accessible to the (admissions-paying) public instead of just to publicists.

Also, I had an ice-cream sandwich for lunch. The ice cream was iffy but the two chocolate chip cookies were great.

Ooooh. Ice cream sandwich. Want.

Shmuel's small worded insults reminded me of an interesting essay (in PDF), which I PMed to him, but thought I might as well post here, because he can't get his PMs anymore and the rest of you might find it interesting. (Disclaimer: It's about Java, and how it should change to meet future demands, but that's not really the interesting part. The interesting part (for me) is the trick the author uses to prove a point. It's very well done.)

And I suppose, while I'm posting about linguistic tricks, I suppose I should add a link to This Is The Title Of This Story, Which Is Also Found Several Times In The Story Itself. Sentence fragments. Damn good device.

Uh, just closing off that last italic tag. There, that's better, although now I'm thinking evil thoughts about what I could put next...

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

I just got treated to an enormous amazing lunch:

1. sourdough bread with herbed butter 2. 1/4 of a bottle of good merlot 3. penne piccata-- full of lemony buttery capery chickeny goodness 4. rich dark coffee with cream and sugar 5. espresso cheesecake with a pile of whipped cream

So adjuncts are good for something, after all!

Heh...here's something that is cracking me up. When I was taking pictures a couple days ago so I could have a new user photo that isn't that overly-romanticised black and white one, my cat, Tia, stole Petite Pete off my desk. I started taking pictures of her with him, and snapped one that I think is hilarious. It's small because I resized it to be the size of the user photos, but I hope it amuses someone else.

I'll link to it instead of embedding it for work-friendliness.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Kate, that is a fabulous pic! I love it.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Heh. bwinton, as I read that "title of this story" essay you linked to all I could think of was the theme to the old Gary Shandling Show.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

I want velata's lunch.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Yeah that lunch sounds wonderful. A co-worker took us all out to lunch today, but I didn't like what I ordered. I couldn't decide so I just randomly picked something, but what I got isn't what I wanted. I think I will make a special dinner to compensate.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

My favorite local musician played on campus today at lunchtime, and I got to sit and eat my lunch while listening to him play and sing. I'm taking tomorrow off to spend a four day weekend with my love. It's actually pretty cool outside - only 70 degrees (F) today. All good things.

Something that makes me laugh, and not in a nice way:
I have the space, and the domain name is available
That is a fabulous cat picture, I'd wear that on a t-shirt anyday!
Cat t-shirt also to make me laugh courtes y of Geeklove.com
and finally, my favourite comment from today. My husband's co- worker is now describing me to everyone as my husband's "Sharon"

"Not the ham, Ozzy, not the ham!"

Oh, well...

I bitched about a delayed printing/mailing job on the bitch/moan thread, so here's the remedy. I just got a call from the printer and she was able to deliver the entire job to the mail house just in the nick of time (YAHOO!!!!) Which means that it should go out tomorrow.

Also....only 16 minutes before I can go home. And tomorrow is Friday and my boss won't be here and I only have to work until 1pm.

The Richard Thompson concert on Sunday (the one I've been procrastinating about) is not sold out yet. Therefore, I'll be able to pick up a ticket after work today.

I really love his music, and he's always put on a great show when I've seen him before, so I don't know why I delayed so long this time. Concert Sunday, yay!

I just went to Cosi and had their signature salad, which was amazing and full of pear and grapes and pistachios and gorgonzola and oh yeah, some lettuce, all mixed up with shallot sherry vinaigrette. Mmmm. Also on the menu: a faboo extreme peach smoothie. I also went and bought school supplies (why are there so many pen choices??) and a previewed copy of "Lord of the Rings" on DVD for $14. I feel better, but maybe that's just because the ice cream truck left.

Got my schoolbooks, courtesy of the super-cute UPS man who keeps asking me "what's a nice girl like you doin' in a neighborhood like this?" Except it's not annoying, because he's super-cute and wears little brown shorts. I'm way too excited about having this big gorgeous stack of cool books. I'm also excited that I just got paid for the freelance work I did and am about to shower and go treat myself to sushi. Or sesame chicken. But before that, I get to pick up the last Lemony Snicket, finally reserved for me, at the library! And finally, tomorrow my best friend is back in town, and my cat is coming with him.

All around, it's a pretty good day.

I actually did get bwinton's PM earlier, and PMed him to tell him that I thought the essay in question was brilliant, but the board went down immediately after that, apparently before he got the response. Great stuff, though.

Otherwise, after my "Have delivered smackdown. Go me." moment, I went out and had a couple of enjoyable conversations, one with my academic advisor, and another with a fellow grad student instructor, so it's been a pretty nice day over here. Aside from the forum going down, that is.

Lunesse and I had free Chinese food for lunch while checking out JournalCon banquet locations. Also, I parked in the parking garage in Chinatown, and the different sections of the garage, instead of being marked with letters or colors, are demarcated by the Chinese symbols for things like "Bravery," "Long Life" and "Serenity." I parked on the 4th floor "Honesty" section.

Got one extra day extention on my annual report (see "What's up your ass" thread), so I can dragoon my coworker on Tuesday and get her to give me all the stuff she should have given me in the first place. (Ibid.) AND I not only found the stuff she did wrong, but discovered that SHE had been hiding our six months of missing statistics. (ibid again. Maybe even op cit. I dunno, it's been a while.)

There was a brief happy dance.

There was an even happier dance when I discovered that our statistics had increased, which means that all the stuff we did to get things going again ... it actually worked! Woo-hoo!

And then I found out that the chances are very good that the grant proposal for one of our donors that I slaved over this summer will actually go through. (Although I will say that it's mildly discouraging to discover, after all that work, that he's likely not to look at the thing in the first place. Apparently, as long as its fewer than seven figures, he tends to just wave his hand at it and say, "Go buy what you need.")

I'm on vacation. As of now. The way the last two weeks have gone, I thought the day would never come. But here it is! And I finished a very unpleasant task before I left work so I have a sense of accomplishment going into my vacation. I'm going away for the weekend so there is a possibility we could have a brand new server and forum by the time I return. If not, I'll get lots of reading done.

Also, Shmuel's link above made me laugh and laugh.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

I'm also on vacation, as of right now! I am so pleased.

Ooh. If you haven't read the complete Very Secret Diaries before, you're in for a treat. And then check out the T-shirts. (Use this link, not the one found on the first page linked to here.) I currently own the Aragorn and Legolas shirts...

Cocksuckers: the Musical arrived today. I am highly pleased. Also, I've discovered even more nice TUS people in Toronto who will keep me company while I'm there. And I had a lovely dinner out.

I also have an inexplicable craving for cake, with no cake in sight, but I'll just have to suffer through that.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Sometimes the U.S. Postal Service really comes through. I only mailed the CD on Tuesday. Yay!

Hope you enjoy it, Stacey.

(way up there Kate was talking about user photos)

I probably should have mentioned it on the old board, when you could still actually see the picture, but the photo Kate started using recently was absolutely stunning. Total girly crush forming stunning.

Cosi! Yum.

I had lunch out today, at Mad4Mex. Lovely burrito and perfect blue cornbread. Man, I love cornbread.

We went to Ruth's Chris in DC for dinner. Yum. We ordered one meal and split it and still had too much food. Yum again. My one bite of chocolate raspberry cake was divine.

Yesterday, in a mad fit of frustration over money and the lack thereof, I put a whole bunch of books up for sale on Amazon - and today - woot! I sold the first one! It's only $7, but damn, it feels good.
