Are we dead again?

I am getting that deja vu all over again - is the server down, or is it just me?

Answers

Unfortunately, it's not just you.

Aargh!

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2002

No, Catherine, there are more of us over in the "Technical Problems" thread. I wish Greenspun refreshed the databases more often.

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2002

It's dead. Tech support is ignoring me. The new server should arrive here today or tomorrow, but the second processor won't come until next week, I think. We'll probably start beta testing the new forum (we're going to try to upgrade to the next version, although we may decide we hate it and go back before we open it up for you guys) next week. We've set things up with the collocation place so we're all set there.

This is a different problem than we had before at West Host so it might be fixed by this afternoon. Jeremy backed up the database night before last, so even in the worst case scenario we can fix it without all that rigmarole, although we'd lose all the exciting and scintillating posts from yesterday and this morning.

For now, though, I order you all to go forth and be productive. Catch up on your filing! Return those phone calls you've been avoiding! Dust your bookshelves! Take your kids to the park! Get your hair done! Go to the gym! Read a book! Get some booty!

In that case, I'ld like to give extra thanks to mayaroo, who sent me a new book to read just in time.

Figures. I'm supposed to be working on a project here at work and had sworn myself off the 'Net today except for TUS. How the hell am I going to stay sane without you guys? Excuse me while I go off and pout for a while. Thanks for the update, Beth.

You guys, I just found the single most useless page on the internet. I defy you to top that one.

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2002

Wow, it's great to see a host offer detailed, real-time updates like that. Huh. I can't really think of any pages more useless than this one. A tough challenge.

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2002

I thought I'd find all of you here. I was hoping it was just me but guess not!

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2002

I think that the "our process" sections for many web development companies are high in the "useless pages" department... but I digress.

I thought that I had broken it or something. I was trying to save a post I had just written when I received no response. This happens once a week or so on our Intranet and the direct cause is some wonky user save hiccup so I made the assumption.

Hmmm..do you think I am exhibiting signs of extreme codependence if I actually have both the short cut for TUS and this board on my desktop, so I didn't even have to go searching for the link to the greenspun board? On the plus side, I was taking a break fro TUS today and was only checking it during lunch (honest!), so I suppose its the universe's way of telling me that yes, I really do need to finish the items on my to-do list today.

I am going through withdrawal here. I am tiarollie on AIM or ceithern@hotmail.com on msn messenger. Or let's set up a chat room on a free site somewhere.

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2002

The board's back up as of 1:05 PM Eastern, hopefully for good. Yay!

-- Anonymous, August 28, 2002

Anybody else get kicked off by some nasty SQL errors just now?

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Ayep. Maybe we all got booted for excessive crabbiness.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Westhost's certainly trying to go out with a bang, eh?

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

It happened to me briefly yesterday, so I thought it was just me! Poor Beth. Virtual margaritas all around.

Dulcie.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

I'm with Lynda. Maybe it's a sign from God (not the forum God, but you never know) that we needed a break from the crab factor on the board today.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Poor Beth. Poor Jeremy. Poor us, flung back into greenspun.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Sob. Now I actually have to do work. Dammit.

Amy and Blake, if you happen to be lurking about -- did either of you happen to catch my PMs in the brief instant between my sending them, and the board dying? If not, I'll send email instead.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

The board is back as of 1:15 PM Eastern.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Now I keep getting an internal server error message. Anyone else?

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

AND it's down again as of 10:32 pacific time. Fuckers.

Yesterday I got conflicting answers. First: well, someone else was running a script that overwhelmed the server. It's fine now. Second: you just have too much traffic. (The first one was from the tech support guy I like, the second was from the one who kept breaking the board during the big crash.) Today I've had no answers, but I just got here.

The new server did NOT arrive today. If it gets here tomorrow Jeremy will work on it over the long weekend. If it does not, we're going camping and we'll do it next week.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Oh, and you guys might find this amusing: one of the reasons the server is taking so long to get to us is that the Dell customer service rep could not get it through her head, even with spelling assistance, that Jeremy does not work for the California Department of Floristry. Since California shocking does not even have a Department of Floristry, the order for the extra processor got cancelled the first time through, and it took them forever to agree to actually ship the server itself.

(Department of Forestry. See how that's different?)

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Now I'm all conflicted. Because as much as I want to be quit with Westhost & their unhelpful customer service (cocksuckers), I think Beth & Jeremy deserve a break to go camping.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

I don't know why Beth doesn't just say, "Tough break, guys, we're going camping and we'll work it next week." Really. (Note to self: nevernevernevernever be responsible for a message board.) And now I have to do the Estimate that Ate Cleveland. Fuckers. (Consistancy is the hobgoblin of little minds ~ Emerson)

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Because it's so important that a state have a department to deal with all the aspects of flowers.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Yes, I think even if the server does arrive before the weekend, you should pretend it didn't and go camping anyway.

Stacey, I got and replied to your PM, much good that does you. Those dates work perfectly, and I forbid you to stay at a hotel on Thursday. I mean, unless you really want to.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

No, I think we're going to be doing whatever it takes to move the board ASAP. We won't be upgrading the software yet after all, because getting the hell away from West Host has just become priority one. I'm not sure we'll be back up at all before the move now.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

I think the new board needs a Department of Floristy.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Maybe that's what we should call the garden section.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Heh! Perfect.

This is what happens when I go off and take a nap. "Internal Server Error" is a very scary thing to see in big, black letters when you're only half-awake. For a moment there, I thought it was a comment on my mental health.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

THERE y'all are. I thought everyone left for a party no one told me about.

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Amy, you're an angel. We'd much rather stay with you guys than at a hotel, if you'll have us. Especially since the last-minute change of plans is costing us an arm and a leg each.I'll double-check with Len about the flight time -- he was either booking us to arrive at 7:30 pm or 11:30 pm, depending on whether he managed to reschedule a meeting.

At some point, you should email me with your address, and maybe a phone number in case we get hopelessly lost. Wouldn't hurt to know if there's an easy public transportation way to get from the airport to your condo either, though I suspect if we're taking the late flight, we'll just take a damn cab. (If Toronto has cabs. It just occurred to me that I don't think I've ever seen a cab in Toronto. They exist, right?)

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

Yeah, right, Guppy. Like we'd go to a party without the most popular girl in the group!

-- Anonymous, August 29, 2002

thank God y'all are here. Plin, you crack me up.
