does any body know how to convert a mpeg file to avi and what is the software needed. pls, hope that u can help me

You can use Virtualdub.exe to convert into AVI format. But please bear in mind that this an uncompressed format.

Virtualdub is Freeware which you can download from the website.

REalPRoducer Basic might work and it free. However you really have to dig hard for it!
