Oh! This site is back up!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

Maybe we should have an alternate one? I mean, what if it just crashes for good? I would miss you guys! Lost in cyber space... :-)

I was thinking the same thing Patty!! By the second day of not getting through, I was starting to miss everyone. LOL Any ideas where to start another site? I have one on yahoo but it's been pretty dead-actually non existent for most of it's life.:( It's hard to start a new group but since we all want to stay together it would sure be nice to have a back up site. Stan, got any ideas for a back-up location??

-- Kathy Aldridge (beckoningwinds@yahoo.com), August 23, 2002.

Well, not "start a new group", so to speak, but have a safety line at least. Yup, it's needed.

Yahoo *WAS* a great place for groups - - but those pop ups drive me crazy since Yahoo took their groups "commercial". It takes me forever now to move among the couple of groups I like.

You can start the same type/style of forum as BWH and Homesteading today for a minimal cost - - everything all built in. Access and info is on the BWH site.

I really, really, like the Lusenet format - - it is very disappointing the down time experienced here. Wonder what causes it to "crash"? Are there active boards with high activity like the old countryside that cause the problems?

When I set up the singles board on this server, I chose ezboard.com as a lifeboat backup site.

The thing about yahoo and the ezboards are yhe popo-ups! They drive you nuts. You could down load webwasher or some such, I suppose.

Come to think of it, I don't guess the ads matter that much if it's just a back up. Kathy, since you already have a place set up, that would work fine, right? We all just need to add the addy to our favourites, just in case we need a place to meet up.

Could it be this forum has become as addictive as hard drugs ? Maybe a Forumholics Anonymous is needed besides the back-up site . A place to withdraw while waiting for the site to come back up . It has to be the people here , cause I checked out other forums when Lusenet was down and there was no feelings to indulged in conversation over there....Except with JoJ at the freedom forum...It wasn't too bad the the site went down... I got to eat , shower and brush my hair .These are things I rarely have time for when this forum is running.....Anyone who wants to make sure they stay in contact with friends in case this forum goes down forever , should start to exchange e-mail addresses. You never know, a good cyber-friend could be lost forever.

Here's the address for my site if anyone wants to use it as a backup that would be great. Stan if you have a different site that you'd prefer to use please don't feel I'm trying to 'take over', just let us know where to meet if Lusenet goes down again. I don't approve members or require approval to post so it may work as a backup until a better place is found. Either go to yahoo groups and type in humane homesteader or try this link: humanehomesteader-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

-- Kathy Aldridge (beckoningwinds@yahoo.com), August 24, 2002.

I've tried it Kathy and I couldn't find the site , only the Yahoo groups page ?

-- SM Steve (Unreal@home.com), August 24, 2002.

When you get to the Yahoo groups page, type in humane homesteader in the search for a group area-it should come up. I'll go check it out though.

-- Kathy Aldridge (beckoningwinds@yahoo.com), August 24, 2002.

I tried it and it didn't come up so I cut & pasted the address I've listed below. That's odd since it's listed in the directory. Let me know if you find it. Thanks for trying & hope this works. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/humanehomesteader/

I can get the site but ,I'm not able to sign in. Been trying for awhile. I've had a strange happening here this morning, the 2 legged critter type. Than I go to the Freedom self relience forum and found , it's freedoms are based on the religious and political beliefs of the moderator and all other views are not accepted there...I guess my posting there yesterday had some offensive opinoin... I will always see it Now as the Totalitarian Self Reliance forum. I think I should go back to sleep and wake up tommarow.Sometimes a different day is all one needs.

I looked for the site,, and couldnt find it,, yahoo says,, "it doesnt exist". If anyone wishes a backup site,, I think its a fine idea, for when this one is down. SInce KAthy already has one,, if its still up, or Jays site. I dont like the pop ups, but its free,, and it is only a backup,, so. What ever you guys/gals want to use,, fine with me. If Kath will post a link,, along with JAy, then we can take a vote,, or use them both???

-- Stan (sopal@net-pert.com), August 24, 2002.

To everyone who wants to use the site I've got as a back up, that would be great. For some reason it's not listed although my 'moderator' message says it is. So just use the whole link I've posted above starting with the http//. I don't know how to make it clickable so you'll have to cut & paste it. I just checked & Steve was able to get registered so it must work for others, mine is set with cookies so I never have trouble getting to it.

Here's the link for mine again.

I got in just fine! Unfortunately, those pop ups/ads drive me insane. :-( They really do, is it just me? The visual noise! gack.

I could set up something at a fairly ad free site, just a top banner, and no pop ups or flashy banner. Exact same format as here. You _could_ add a backround color, or top picture, change font, etc., there are many options...but you could also, leave it really plain, like here. You can scroll right down to miss the ad. I could set it all up, and then give Stan the password, if he wants to "control" it. You can ban isp's....not that it would ever come to that, but for trolls, mighty handy. But since it's just a backup....I don't know, probably not necessary, it's just those ads drive me to distraction, they really do, even for a short time. Just a suggestion.

Patty, sounds good to me. I don't know enough to start from 'scratch'. I guess I've just got used to pop ups, I get sadistic glee in hitting that close button. :):). I do understand though, I find the ones on GeoCities very annoying;sometimes I can't get them to close. Like I said it doesn't matter to me just so long as we have a place to meet if this site goes down for good. Just post the addy when you & Stan get it ready & open for business. :) Have a great week.
