Employee Time Table

SAL Employee Time Table has a section called, "Location of Tracks and Private Sidings Not Shown In Time Table". Under Tampa Sub-Division, April 1957 ETT, there are 5 columns; 1. Siding Name 2. Station Number 3. Mile Post 4. Car Capacity 5. Opening. The opening column shows either, North, South, or Both. Question: Does North mean the train enters the siding from the North or does it mean the opening to the siding is facing North? Example: Pasco Packing Company / 797 / 796.8 / 60 / North

Carey, I failed to mention in my previous response to your question that the Pasco Packing Co. spur was a joint use track, as it had a south end opening on the ACL mainline through the middle of the Pasco Packing complex. I cannot confirm if the trackage was always joint use, or became joint use through the subsequent construction of a connection track following the SAL/ACL merger in l967. I believe that the spur was always joint use, based on memory (scary thought!).Following the merger, the SAL main line was abandoned and removed. The joint use spur track you mentioned became the route of access to a section of the SAL mainline between the spur switch and about a mile south that was left intact in order to provide rail service to some customers (e.g. a gasoline/diesel fuel dealer and a propane gas outlet). Carey, I just came across your question, and yes, trains entered the siding from the north. No wye switch arrangement was involved. The track extended from the mainline in a southeasterly direction and across U.S. 301 to service some cold storage loading docks and dried citrus peel storage bins on the north side of the Pasco Packing complex on the north side of Dade City. Very little evidence of the trackage is left, except in the curbing on the highway. A large trucking company's parking lot occupies the old right-of-way on the west side of U.S. 301. Best wishes! You are correct in saying "trains entering"

Interesting question, Carey. I can't tell you about SAL ETT's , but on the NYC System "north (or any other cardinal direction) would mean the direction the switch points face. In your example, your first guess; therefore, would fit the NYC rule.
