Sweetie is in Charleston

Well, it's just outside Charleston but that label will do. He moved into his apartment on Thursday and managed to make it to work on time Friday--actually, he was half an hour early. We seem to have done quite well on the location because he said the work-time traffic is surprisingly easy--moderate, compared to the heavy stuff in Col. Springs and here on I-40.

Friday was orientation and Monday will be more of the same, including bennies explanations. One of the funny things: warning signs have had to be put up because the firm runs courses for training in its software and two trainees from the Midwest were found to be trying to pet an alligator in the tidal marsh area behind the building. . . Gawd!

Dress is described as casual, the only limit being that you can't wear shirts with writing on them. (One can see where the T-shirts might have gotten out of hand.) Shorts are permitted too.

Sweetie's stuff was delivered early Saturday and cable TV/Net connected soon after. He thinks he's in heaven. The cable co. had a 6-month special on DVD, including HBO and other movie channels, amounting to $5 a month more than basic cable and Net. Of course, at the end of 6 mos, when the subscriber is well and truly hooked, the price goes up by $20/month, but it seems there's Discovery Wings and Discovery Space on there too, so Sweetie is in heaven. After discovering (pun--ha!) this, he sent me an e-mail saying he would just have food sent in. What did I tell ya? If it don't have cable TV and pizza delivery, we can't live there.

By the way, prior to this Sweetie had been connecting to the Net via an $80 cable on his cell phone and a $5 monthly charge. Ain't modern technology amazin'? (This national plan thingie we have provides for 3500 free minutes on weekends and after 9 PM.) I need to get one of them things meself--plus a new battery for this decrepit thing. The computer, I mean, not me. I wish.

The firm's restaurant serves good food for breakfast and lunch at very reasonable prices and the interior of the building in general is very attractive (e.g., there's a lovely atrium full of beautiful plants and water features). The firm is holding its own job fair later this month with a variety of jobs available across the spectrum. I find this very encouraging! I mean, what other software firm anywhere in this country is holding a JOB FAIR??? (Not connected to homeland security, anyway.)

So far, so good.

Old Git,

Sounds like your Sweetie has finally found the right place. I hope that it all continues to be this good, and that it is a job he likes. To bad they aren't located in OKC. ;)

Great! So, what's your schedule for moving down there, and will it be the same apartment?

Don't know when I'll be able to get down there--back to the old "six months or so." Maybe more, maybe less. I'm working on repairing the door jambs shredded by the late, sharp-clawed Groucho. Still have ceilings to paint, stuff to donate to the thrift shops, more stuff to sort out, more stuff to get rid of, outside to work on as soon as temp gets below sauna on acid. If the woman across the street still wants the house, it won't be too long. However, if I have to put it on the market, who knows? Could be a while. The employment situation here is very wobbly, as you know.

Can't move into the same apt., BrookS. Besides it being a small one- bedroom, it's $200 per pet and I bet they have a limit. . . We'll have to sell this place, then go find a house quick, then go from there.

Dress the "pets" in baby clothes and call them by human names...they sound like babies when they cry anyway, right?

Funny thing is, only a couple of them yowl at all loudly and none sound like a baby--definitely CAT noises! Since they're all rescue kitties they learned early on not to make any noise. One of them, Minou, makes a very tiny, very soft "mew" and she had been in the house for YEARS before she even did that.
