Important: please don't clear your cookies

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Xeney : One Thread

Some of you probably already have, but if you haven't, please don't. And don't log out of the old forum, either, if you currently have that option. We're trying to rebuild the user list, and it will be easiest if we can use your cookies to do that.

More info later. Right now, I think we're calling it a night.

So, when everyone was talking about sending you cookies, they meant browser cookies? What a letdown.

Yeah, terribly disappointing.

Some updates: the board is still broken, but broken in a different way. I have no idea what they did to it this morning but they managed to log me out, which means I can't see how many users there are or any other information. And I can't log in because the board is closed. (A really stupid feature in this version; if an admin logs herself out while the board is closed, she's fucked. You have to manually edit the config file to reopen it.)

However, we're not worrying too much about what West Host does. Jeremy successfully rebuilt the board on our home server last night. The user list is still corrupt in this version, but everything else is there, and he came up with several ways to rebuild the bulk of the user list. Last night he was thinking we could have xeney.net back up by Sunday; that way you guys can have your playground while we work on setting up the server.

Beth, that's excellent news. Both of you try to do at least ONE relaxing thing this weekend, though. Please don't spend the entire weekend working on this so that you hit Monday feeling like you need another Friday.

(Any moreso than usual, at any rate.)

Beth, all my westhost domains are down again. Do you have any idea of what's going on, by any chance? Or did Jeremy extract some terrible revenge?

-- Anonymous, August 16, 2002

I wish. (I mean, I don't wish that on you. But revenge would be nice.)

Mine have been up and down all morning. Maybe our tech support guy and the collocation outfit's tech support guy had a huge brawl in the server room, and they knocked out the whole system.

What if already logged out or cleared our cookies? I'm not sure whether I did or not, but I usually log out when I leave the forum, so I'm probably logged out. Does that hose things up?

-- Anonymous, August 16, 2002

It might or might not. I'm sure a lot of people have cleared the cookie. If this fix doesn't work for some of you, we have another way to get your user record back; this is just faster and easier. So the more people who leave their cookies alone, the easier it will be to get us back online.

I've not logged out, and get two MySQL-errors right now when I visit xeney.net. One error shows my username, and my password too but coded.

-- Anonymous, August 16, 2002

Yes, everyone is getting that. Tech support has been slowly trashing the board bit by bit. What we're talking about now is rebuilding it from what we have stored on our home server.

In fact, I think Jeremy is composing the, "Okay, you've had your chance, now please get the fuck out of our database and let me rebuild this" e-mail right now.

This seems like the perfect time and thread to ask a question that's been in the back of my mind for a while now. To wit: should I actually log myself out when I leave the forum? I don't think I've actually ever logged out but once or twice since I signed up, and now I'm starting to feel bad that I've been a big bandwidth hog without realizing it. (Curtis, shut up.)

-- Anonymous, August 16, 2002

Nah. It doesn't affect bandwidth. You should log yourself out if someone else might sneak in and use your computer and pretend to be you and make us all hate you. Otherwise, it's up to you.

I log out at the office if I'm going to be away for awhile, but otherwise I don't bother. The forum automatically logs you out when you're inactive, so really you aren't logged in; it's just relogging you in automatically when you come back.

Speaking of automatic things, my life is going to become easier when we move to the new server. I haven't been able to set it up to automatically delete old threads or run a backup, because those functions are high in either CPU usage or bandwidth, respectively. We'll be able to do both of those things weekly now. We'll probably have scheduled downtime on Friday nights because that's the slowest time by far. Probably half an hour tops.

Um, Im going to have to admit to being part of the cookie problem. Our computer's operating system crashed the other day so absolutely eveything was lost, and we started from scratch a few days ago, right after the forums went down. SO anything you'd have from me was from the old computer, and not this new system. Im apologizing in advance for whatever trouble that causes on behalf of my sucky computer. If it'll make anything better, I can send you some real cookies...

-- Anonymous, August 16, 2002

Don't worry, Sarah, the trouble it will cause will be primarily to YOU. Heh. Not a worry. You'll be in the second round of users to be reinstated instead of the first, that's all.
