Corn Maze

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Hello, all!

Was out doing some last minute field checking with Kenton. Karen Pendleton took our picture after we got back (see below). We found all of their punches, and I got some ideas for how to set the course. I will warn folks that there will be a stretch through a part that Kenton said, 'that part isn't for little kids.'

I hope it's cooler. We've set the start time at 10, and while Gene has let me know of concerns about being done in time, I'm not worried. Karen said the maze will open to the public at noon... and if things are as they have been, she doesn't expect a massive turnout right at noon! Also, I will keep the course to something that can be completed in less than an hour walking at an easy pace. (For those of you who want more, you can race in the labyrinth!) The night before is the 'night maze' event... check out the website at http://www.pendletons.com While you are there, you can see the picture of Kenton and me on their photos of the week page.

Be sure to bring some extra money as they have a nice gift shop and some nice produce and free range chickens, if you want to purchase something to make dinner with that night. They also have t-shirts of the maze for about $12 each. Do support them, Karen has been a joy to work with.

Thanks, Fritz, for another great course. The last two controls were especially fun; you could only make right hand turns! The other finishers were there to heckle you as you tried to figure it out (the maze was made of hay bales at this point, so they could see your every move). Another successful event.

The meet looked good. Can someone post the link to the results?

The results can be found on the same URL as the James A Reed results are posted.

Some were unaware of these bonuses as the start was a bit disorganized. Others seemed to focus on bonuses to their advantage, notably the Neubergers and Hermesches! The Pendletons thank you! Taking splits of time taken within the right hand only maze (in the lady bug) would have been illuminating, but the experience of watching and heckling far outweighed the information lost. :)

Thank you to all who participated, especially Gene for helping with registration. Please encourage people to attend the corn maze. This might be the last year, as attendence is way down.

Course setter's notes: (slightly revised)

Hello and welcome to the 3rd Corn Maze O' Challenge!

As has been true in years past, running is not allowed; nor is cutting through the rows of corn. Again, this year, I will be deducting 10 seconds for each piece of trash brought in. However, I ask the more experienced folks to start later to allow others a first chance at these bonuses. You might run into some weeds as some of the paths have not been as frequently traveled. But the paths are wider this year as Stan was given a riding mower instead of the push mower. Be sure to drink lots of water and stay well hydrated.

This year there is more to the maze than on the 'fan' map, so I took the liberty of drawing a map from the aerial photo, adding in the labyrinth, grasshopper and lady bug. This allows a bit of a challenge, especially at the end in the form of the right hand maze within the ladybug. You may NOT turn left (until you are just to exit the maze). If you find you have come to a place where you must turn left, then retrace your steps to your previous turn and begin again from there. The last two controls are in the ladybug maze and should make for some exciting spectator controls. Please avoid the temptation to lean over a haybale to punch, but only punch when you are standing directly next to the marker. Jeering or cheering can be expected from the onlookers!

I might suggest the labyrinth for a warmup or cooldown, but plan on 10 mins at an easy walking pace just to make it in. Another 10 to get out.

Thank you for coming and enjoy!

Fritz
