Answers

Assuming you know the IP address of the troll(s), you can either:

a) Give the poster a stern warning to knock off the shit

b) Change the password and send it to all but the troll(s). They can then come back after apologizing profusely, and promising to knock off the shit.

c) Or don't let them back. Use the discretion you DIDN'T use the first time.

What's the point of having a password protected forum, if you're going to give it to anyone freely without thought? I don't get it.

When you start your own forum, and some 90 or so people ask, some beg, you for the password, and you try your best to do the right thing to include folks without letting too many idiots in, but a troll or two gets in anyway, THEN you can whine about giving away a password without thought. It may have left some "trolls" behind, but it did leave many "non-trolls" behind and now we're stuck with suggestions to try to get people to come over here.

There are some realities that need to be understood about so- called "trolls":

1) They can't be avoided, especially since the definition of "troll" is dependent on the person. Remember, on the original TimeBomb forum, Cherri and Maria were considered "trolls" as were many "pollies."

2) Trolls aren't so bad, especially if you ignore them. If you can't or don't want to ignore them, that's fine too. Trolls can be fun to play with sometimes. They even help to lighten the mood.

The most annoying type of troll is the one who tries to mess up the HTML, but nearly all these types of problems can be fixed by any of us - no admin support required. The worst one was probably the "shapes" person over on Uncensored, but we survived that, not to mention attacks by CPR, LadyLogic, and some unknown spammer. The board continued unabated.

For nearly two months after the admins of the CheEZBoard TimeBomb forum left, the forum ran by itself with no moderation at all. There were no fights, no griping, and no problems. Anybody could post anything, and somehow, the forum managed to avoid the anarchy and chaos that Olson and his goons continue to believe will occur without application of the "heavy hand."

I think the idea that we can run away to a place where "trolls" will never find us is just plain silly. We are all "trolls" in one way or another. Even dIeTeR could be considered a troll. If there are "trolls" among us, so what? Ignore them or embrace them. Either solution will be more productive than trying to escape them.

This is ridiculous. They used html and script tags within posts to make it so that the Contribute An Answer button would not appear. The workaround was simple. There was no "server choking" and they rarely posted any new threads since the objective was obviously to disrupt existing threads.

As I said, most of the stuff could be worked around. I encountered maybe one or two threads that I couldn't fix, but that was about it. And yes, I was there until the very end.

Look, if everyone is more comfortable in a password-protected forum, then that's fine. But you should realize that what we have now is pretty much how things are going to stay. People don't just "drop by" a password-protected forum. The audience here is small and slowly getting smaller. Getting rid of more "trolls" will make it smaller still. I don't think eliminating even more people from discussion will solve anything.

My checks say I never get the same address [according to my records]. Of course, if I wanted to hide, I could use one of the sites that would assign another floating IP on top of the one that I use. Then again, I could use that second site to proxy a server in some other part of the world. That would give Unk three floating IP's to search. You can extend that if you want to really hide.
