Col. Springs--we were right!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Current News - Homefront Preparations : One Thread

So Jim got back from lunch yesterday just in time to see boss signing a house sales contract with real estate guy. Boss said he and SO are moving to HQ in Tempe. They must have a date, probably September 1, as we suspected. And we are to believe that two sr. developers and a part-time bookkeeper will be reason enough to keep the CS office open??? Obviously, Sweetie made the right decision to get out when he did. The other sr. developer doesn't want to move to Tempe, either, so we presume he's looking for another job too.

Sweetie's last day is Friday, his stuff will be picked up next Mon or Tues, so he should be here by Saturday (13th) at the latest. He's due to start work in Charleston on the 19th of August. So far, so good.

Dan got another call about the same job he was told about LAST SUMMER and it never came through! well, seems they will need some people in the next 2 weeks..BUT they MUCH have so many "off shore" clients...can you believe this..our US citizens are on un employment or worse and American jobs HAVE to be given to OFF shore clients...URGH...Dan have been fuming over this all afternoon..plus they bid in at 3/4 less than our market...o you know who gets the job, even if they CAN"T DO THE WORK!!!!

so glad Sweetie's deal is working out.

We believe the layoff at the first place a year ago in May was because the jobs went to "offshore" software developers (Russia) and, of course, we know so many other high-tech jobs have gone overseas, particularly to India and, I suspect, to Asian countries, like Singapore and Malaysia. The new firm, though, has built a lovely new building and is heavily invested in the community so we hope they won't collapse any time soon. They do seem to have plenty of money for extras (they just notified Sweetie they have signed him up for some Microsoft software issues or something, which is worth close to a thousand a year) and, as we have so wryly noted, beware when a firm starts cutting the freebies! We knew something was wrong at the first place when they replaced the free Twinings with Lipton and quit stocking Snapple and granola bars. Seriously!

Is Dan still working via contract? Sweetie's friend here who worked contract for years has taken a regular job because the pickings got really thin. It's very scary.

I am pushing for contract to hire..he says..you are not safe in either one..so go for the bigger bucks, (contract) so you have enough to SAVE for the lean times. According to him and everyone else.....there is no more security, so you take what you can find.

I don't know if Sweetie realizes it but we're locked into hired work because of the refusal of health insurance companies to cover diabetics unless through a group plan. I can get health insurance through Blue Cross/Blue Shield only but anything remotely connected to diabetes isn't covered. (Diabetes can caus almost every condition you can think of so it would be a bit of a nightmare to try to prove whether the ailment was diabetes-related or not.)

Sweetie dismissed contract work because of the cost and hassle of keeping records, self-employment tax, double social security payments, own retirement savings, and so on. (He's not very good at keeping receipts, to say the least!) Around here contracting pays about $85/hour. We're hoping the high-tech industry will improve in the next year or two and we all won't feel quite so insecure.
