What is the cost and time associated with getting an annulment?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I was divorced 8 years ago from a man who was emotionally as well as physically abusive to me. I left fearing for the safety of my son and I. I tried to work things out with him for the time prior to leaving, but he wouldn't agree. I have not seen him in several years, and he refuses to pay child support or see our child who is now 11 years old. I have been dating a man who raised the issue of annulment, and I am now looking into it so if I remarry, it can be in the Catholic church. Is a case like mine usually approved? What is the time frame and cost associated? Thank You!

Collette,

There are others on the forum more knowledgable than me on this subject but to keep the thread fresh, I will answer with what I know. First, when determining whether an annulment is warranted, the Catholic Church will not be interested in his actions after marriage. She will be trying to determine if a valid marriage occurred. The facts that will determine this would be where were you married (Justice of the Peace, Protestant minister, Priest) and what were both of your statuses (Protestants, Catholic, other).

The best thing to do is to set up an appointment with your local Pastor to discuss these things. He will then help you begin the process of acquiring a decree of Nullity.

Lastly, I am not sure what the typical amount of donation is. And the process can take anywhere from 6 months to a year.

From start to finsh for me was about a year. In the process, there is a lot of writing that you have to do to document what the marriage was like, along with interviews with both your family and that of your former spouse so even the inlaws get talked to.

THe cost for all the phoning ane adminsitration is a few hundred dollars, but I just paid mine at $20 per month until it was paid for.

THere was a great relief that I did not expect like Jesus telling me that it was "alright" and forgiveness for my contribution to the lack of success of the relationship.

Tha feeling alone is worth all of the trouble and expense in going through with the anullment.
