NYPost CONDIT: ‘SCREW' CONNIE CHUNG AND REST OF THE MEDIA By ED ROBINSON

July 30, 2002 -- Rep. Gary Condit claims the media wanted him to say he "did" slain intern Chandra Levy, and compares newscaster Connie Chung to Russian President Vladimir Putin in an angry, defiant interview, it was reported today.

The Washington Post said that in the interview with Esquire magazine, the California Democrat blames the media for his problems after he was romantically linked to Levy, whose remains were found in a Washington D.C., park on May 22.

"I know what they want me to say. They want me to say that I did her," Condit told Esquire.

Condit also rips CNN's Connie Chung, who conducted an interview with him in August while she was with ABC. Many observers have said the interview contributed to his political demise.

"Connie Chung became President Putin to me," Condit said, referring, apparently, to Putin's days with the KGB.

"She wasn't gettin' anything out of me; she wasn't going to break me, no way.

"It's mean, but screw her, you know? To be honest, if people look closely at the interview, they'll see where she went into a daze, she just lost it," Condit said.

The interview will appear in the September Esquire.
