"Female" question!

Just wanted to warn you guys about the subject matter :-)!!

My older sister is having a hysterectomy (everything removed!) in a few weeks. The doctors have told her that HRT is NECESSARY after this procedure for at least a year or so. Does anyone know if this is true??? She has had very heavy bleeding and fibroid tumors over the last 4 yrs. I'm really concerned for her 'cause she feels her doctors are always right. Any ideas????? Thanks!

Ovariohysterectomy (remove the ovaries), too?. Not sure about that, but certain hormones from the ovaries would shut down on removal. I can't speak to that, but I think HRT is routinely recommended.

I do have experience with the basic surgery (still have the ovaries, but they're getting tired!). I had suffered **majorly** from that same condition for years, plus was anemic. The surgery was the (yippee!!!) absolutely best solution for me. I'm pain-free and free in so many other ways, too. As one small example, I could never have planned river rafting trips b/c I could never manage the um, monthly process so far from civilization, etc. I don't spend a couple of days of agony every month, either.

Hopefully, your sister has had a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) opinion, and hopefully from someone that she trusts, not just someone that the insurance industry has indicated to kind of "rubber stamp" opinion #1. Best wishes to her for the best outcome!

Sheepish...she hasn't gotten a second opinion yet, but I talked to her last night and did my best to convince her to. From what she tells me that her doctor has said, she'll be laid up for almost 6 weeks!!?? Wow!

My ex had one and the day she left ( 2 years after the hysterectomy), she was bitchy and told me she didn't need any HRT cause she was still "all woman" as she was shaving her moustache and sideburns with my Norelco. She also sprouted hair all around her nipples and on her back about 6 months after the plumbing removal.

Well now, Jay! Thanks soooo much for sharing all that "personal" info!! Really looking forward to growing older now :-)!

It was just a little gangster moustache, sorta like a red "Little Richard". HRT keeps it all away.
