EVERYONE WAS worried about Y2K, but the true technical failure of the year 2000 struck in voting booths. Old technology, poorly trained poll workers, and systemic flaws tossed George Bush and Al Gore out of an election fight and into a court battle. The damage was extensive. Some 4 million to 6 million votes were lost in the 2000 election, according to a report last year by the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project.
