I am gradually turning into the Worm King!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

My worms are now moving out at an average of 23 cups per day-7 days a week, wormcast sales are holding steady and I'm developing additional products. This added to my gardens has made me forget whatever it was I used to do for a living. Can't easily remember, but whatever it was I do recall it making my butt hurt at raise time( those 2 percent raises used to keep us on "tippy toes" for days after reviews) and overtime assignments :>) Wish I could have done this 20 years ago.

That's COOL Jay. I'm happy that this has worked out so well for you.

You know I'm not exactly sure about what it is you do though. I compost and have plenty of worms in it but there must be something more to what you are doing. Would mind explaining the basic principles? What are the people using the casings and such for? I'd really be interested.

We did Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" when I was in high school, so now I have this vision of Jay dressed like Captain Hook, singing "I am the Worm King, and it is, it is a glorious thing to be the Worm King!" :)

I have composters and breeders. I "advertised" by selling seedling plants raised in wormcast and showing one of my nastiest bins. Now the gardeners on my street that want "sweet worm humus" are glad to pay me a few bucks, so they dont have to deal with it. Like paying a plumber to stick his hands in your toilet, only not as high dollar. My main outlets are the gas station bait racks I'm lining up.

Well, gee, Jay, I thought you were Worm King long time ago! :-D

Worm casting are a WONDERful addition to any plantings. I also usually give my houseplants some in the spring to help their renewal of growth.

Actually Jay, your thread title brought visions of you slowly mutating into a giant worm!

EM, you think Jay's like the mad scientist in the old movie called Hiss, where he turned a fellow into a snake? If we visit Jay, will we come back the same? Twilight Zone at Jay's? Jay's Outerlimits?

I had worms growing in my truck bed until I cleaned it out the other day. I've still got some hay trying to sprout back there.

Jay, do the worms produce a product in the Winter or is this a Summer only operation?

Wildman, (Hell to the King, I mean, Hail to the King)

What, exactly, do worm castings look like?? Are they the little "globs" of dirt-like stuff that I see sitting on top of the ground where there is lots of worm activity? If this is a stoopid question...just ignore me :-)!!

Visions of DUNE filtering through my brain...

From worm boy to Worm King - Long live the King!! All bow before his royal heinie errr highness, I mean!

All goofiness aside, Jay (well, maybe not ALL!) I've always considered what you are doing with the worms and your gardens to be way cool. I printed off all your info from CS long ago for when the day finally comes that I can convince Hubs to let me put a worm bin under the sink. I still worry that I might not have enough scraps to keep the worms AND the chickens happy, tho! Someday, I'd like to tour your facility...

Congrats!!! Worm composting is hitting the big time up here in the Northwest. Seattle PI newspaper is running a two-part series on how to get started. Maybe a big market for your little guys?

It all depends how you work the herd. Left to their own, yes , the castings look like little turds deposited on the surface during feeding at night. If the bins are kept illuminated and all feeding is subterrainian, then the pile slowly converts.

So I guess I have chicken turds inside my coop and worm turds around the outside! Cool!! Since my ducks have all become coyote food, it seems that I have lots more worm poop around.
