JAMBUL

Latin Name: Syzygium jambolanum

Alternate Names: Rose Apple

Family: MYRTACEAE

Parts Used: Seeds, fruit.

Properties: Aromatic, Antidiabetic, Astringent, Carminative, Diuretic, Hypoglycemic, Stomach Tonic.

Internal Uses: Colic, Diabetes, Diarrhea, Dysentery, Epilepsy, Flatulence, Indigestion

Internal Applications: Tea, Tincture, Capsules.

Jambul is best known for its ability to lower blood sugar levels, thus helping the treatment of diabetes and the frequent urination that often goes along with it. It is a mild astringent.

Culinary uses: The ripe fruit tastes similar to apricots and is used in jams.

Energetics: Bitter, Neutral.

Chemical Constituents: Essential oil, phenols (methyxanthoxylin), tannins, alkaloid (jambosine), triterpenoids, ellagic acid, gallic acid, albumen.

Contraindications: Diabetics using Jambul should consult with their physician as insulin dosages may need to be lowered or adjusted. Monitor blood sugar levels carefully.

Comments: The species Syzygium jambolanum was formerly known as Eugenia jabolana.
