September 13, 2001: Y2K caused mistakes in Down Syndrome tests that were given to more than 150 pregnant women, at least four of whom had Down Syndrome pregnancies that went completely undetected. The mistakes, which occurred at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, England, resulted from the Millennial calendar change: when the clock turned to 2001, the computer administering the tests did not understand and instead plugged incorrect numbers into equations used to calculate the risk of Down Syndrome in individual pregnancies. The flawed tests could potentially give rise to serious liability, according to medical experts. Full story reported at BBC News.
