Is the quality of a vcd slightly greater or poorer than VHS video tapes?

VCD is about equal to VHS, if not slightly less in quality.

VCD Quality: better than VHS in normal scenes worse than VHS in fast moving scenes of course, assuming you have a official release VCD...

retail quality vcd are equal/ slughtly inferior to retail vhs /video tape. however many vcds that are on ebay, markets or from asia are v. poor due to poor quality of video not media. excellent vcd can be created from dvd with time and care and good hardware. easy stored/backed up, don,t chew up/no tracking etc etc. prefer vcd over vhs any day!

Honestly and from personal experience: 1) If the VCD is made from VHS source, the quality will be only 60% to 70% of the VHS tape (I have pretty decent analog/DV capture hardware). 2) If the VCD is made from DVD disc (DVD rip), then the quality will be equal to VHS tape. The VHS tapes is the one I rented from Block Buster and most of them have very decent quality. With VHS tapes, there is no such thing as pixelations in hi action scenes. With VCD, I always hold on my breath watching mine to make sure there is no pixellation. The only advantages of VCD are: random access, no FF or RW needed, and the quality stays (whatever it is). After all, the day of VCDs should be over now (at least in US), DVD recorders are available and came down in price. I stop making X/S/VCD and will start making DVD (high bit rate) to obtain unquestionable quality. I know VCDs are still very popular in Asia.

The quality of a vcd is inferior to VHS tape in terms of quality because the resolution of a vcd is only 352x288 compared to 352x576 of VHS. Add in the compression artifacts and you're left with a pretty poor picture.
