AUBURN -- Background checks done for an Auburn rehabilitation center didn't reveal that a job applicant had been charged with raping two residents of a nursing home where he previously worked.

But a simple computer check of court records -- something the general public can do for free at the county courthouse -- show that Julio Castilla, 45, of Kent, was charged in 1991 with two counts of indecent liberties and was acquitted by two juries.

Neither the charges, nor the information about them, were reported to North Auburn Rehabilitation and Health Center, Administrator Marty Davis said yesterday.

So Castilla was hired by the center in September 2000.
