Possible mapping projects

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

On the PTOC yahoo group, there is a discussion of mapping projects for the fall. Efim Shtempler (aka Fema) might be coming to the US in the fall to do some mapping. He is probably going to update the Telemark map for Minnesota OC and is looking for some other projects.

Fema has done several maps for PTOC. He did the new Weston Bend map and updated Knob Noster (which will probably be used for this year's Possum Trot).

What should PTOC do? Where should they get Fema to map?

Is OK interested in hiring Fema? If so, where would we have him map?

I don't know much about the OK bank account, but if OK can afford it, new maps would be great! Maybe Fema can even do more than mapping? Can Fema sew?

How about that park where Snorkel set up an informal meet last winter? Also, what about Swope Park (from all appearances it doesn't look like Snorkel is going to get around to mapping there anytime soon)?

Better yet, maybe we could hire Fema to walk over to the city engineer's office to pick up the basemaps of Swope Park? (I'm no longer holding my breath that Spike is going to get around to doing that!) Then Snorkel really could come through and start mapping (if you believe the only thing holding him back all of these years was a basemap). I'd say that by the 3rd weekend in September, the woods might be tolerable enough that Snorkel can get to work.

Mapping around the Homeland is better. A good use of time would be updates to maps that already exist:

None has been used all that much lately. Others could be more fully mapped and extended: New areas yet to be mapped that seem possible and convenient:

The places with "issues" seem to be Leavenworth, Naish, and perhaps some Corps areas around Perry. We should definitely go for public land with land managers who are trustworthy. Do we know who is running the ship at these parks these days? Perhaps they aren't all bad, but we just haven't checked in for a while?

There's about $700 in the account. Non-interest bearing account, but no taxes paid either and a 0% growth is better investment than most funds the past 18 months. Anyway, any place to map would be fine, but preferably the nicer the woods the better. Perry State Park has potential. Swope Park has been discussed for decades. Camp Naish is conveniently close to everyone. Anyway $700 doesn't buy much.
