greenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread

Gents,

Can any of you provide me with any onformation you have regarding the Lapua 170 Grain Lock Base ammo? I am interested in finding out if this bullet is accurate. How does it compare to the Scenar? Thanks.

The 170 grain Lockbase is the bullet used in Lapua's HPS (high Precision Sniper) ammo and used by Accuracy International in their Aw rifles. I've used it in my reloads and it has proven to be very accurate up to 1000 yards. The heavier bullet (I normally use 155 scenar)in my Parker-Hale M85 (.308) tends to buck the wind better at longer distances and needs less elevation.

Where can the 170 gr Lock Base be found in the US?

Thanks for your help.

I've been working with subject bullet since Feb of this year and I have found it to an outstanding fit with my 20" bbl LTR, .308 Win. I am a tactical and F-class (for practice) shooter. 43.9 gr of TAC propels the bullet to a 2645 fps MV that tracks exactly to the M118 LR mil rd. 37 moa at 1k yds ain't bad for a 20" bbl. The best I was ever able to do with the 175 SMK was 2625 fps MV with TAC and 2550 fps with Varget (44.6 gr).

I recently shot to 1000 yards with the 170gr Lapua Lockbase and was very impressed. Cannot give MOA accuracy, but did score a bullseye at 1000 yards (out of 10 shots on a windy and perhaps lucky day.) This was out of a Sako TRG-21 that has been under half minute at 100yds.

sorry for the late submit...

i dont hand-load, but the lock base ammo i use is sub half MOA (5 shots, to at least 200) in my TRG-21. the 500 yard ballistics are, as mentioned, impressive.

Adam,

Thanks for the information. This is good information. I am going to get some of these and try them. I'll report my findings here.

First,...Is the 170grn LockBase accurate - absolutely, if you take the time to tune a load up to your rifle. Lapua components shout quality and inspire confidence. The 167grn, .30 cal Scenar is a hollow-nosed (not hollow point) bullet optimised for 300m competition, with a BC of 0.470. The 170grn LockBase is an FMJ design with a full lead core right into the nose, and has a BC of 0.525. The LockBase design is optimised for long range shooting by its unique boat tail configuration. This narrows back from the parallel section of the bullet in a conventional manner, but there is a narrow nipple-like protrusion from the base end of the boat tail. This gives a very narrow "base bleed" that enhances stability, reduces drag and probably helps some if the bullet goes transonic at extreme range. Base bleed is the formation of the turbulent wake caused by the pressure wave from the back of the bullet (there is one from the point too)collapsing into the vacuum created by the passage of the bullet through the air. The Lock base may be more tolerant of a wider range of rifling than the Scenar. Basically I would say less than 500m the Scenar might be your best bet. Beyond that probably the LockBase. But hey, try both, your rifle might just be equally happy with either one, or show a strong preference for one of them in your type of shooting. .... Just adds to the enjoyment of loading yer own that you can go and find this out. Good luck with your efforts. Adam . . . out

Bobby,

Thanks. I have heard good things about the Scenar bullet as well. I am particularly interested in the 170 Lock Base though. It looks to be a good bullet too.

paul i have not been able to get any of the lock base, but have shot a lot of sceners and find them one of the best(in my arms anyway)so i would think they should be just as good,if you try them let us know how they work, bobby
