Shopping in a supermarket's electric buggy / wheelchair plus baby

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Disabled Parents Network : One Thread

As a result of my chronic pain I have to use the larger supermarket's electric buggies. I have an 8 week old baby & have to get someone else to look after her in order to go shopping. Can anyone suggest a way of me taking her & doing my shopping at the same time? How do parents cope who are permanently in a wheelchair?

I use a wheelchair outdoors and when my son was a tiny baby I used an over the shoulder sling to carry him when we went out. It was a bit of a strain on my back if I didn't adjust it right, but it worked quite well. I hope you manage to find a solution.

I have cerebral palsey from the waist down. When I go shopping with my 12 week old son, I use a wheelchair with one of those special trolleys that 'clips' onto the front of the wheelchair. I put my baby in the trolley at the front in his polystirene car seat. You could also use the luggage straps for suitcases to secure the baby car seat to the trolly. Hope this helps.

I'm going to get onto my local shopmobility about this problem.
