SVCD on 700MB CD-R

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I understand SVCD can hold up to 35 minutes on a 650MB CD-R (after that, the video quality detiorates slightly), but how many minutes worth of video can I record a SVCD on a 700MB CD-R? I'm making a 120 minute movie.

Up to 40mins or so at 2550b/s total peak bitrate. Depends, but only by a few minutes either way, on your program material after 2-pass VBR encoding. U will always come around to requiring at least 3 700MB CD-Rs for that.

svcd max bitrate (2750mbit/s) x 35 min = full (650mb)CD

there is nothing that says you have to encode at maximum bitrate.

all comsumer based capture devices have a hard time encoding at lower bitrates.

you best option is the record at 4000-6000mbit/s and re-encode using a software encoder like tmpgenc (ive gotten good quality at 1500mb/s using 2 pass encoding).

this process is slow but if quality counts and you dont want to use 4 cds for your movie then its the only way to go.

dont judge the your work on the monitor. your monitor can show detail that your tv cant.

I have actually recorded 85 minutes worth of SVCD on a 700 MB CD-R with only minor pixaling in a few spots using a 2-pass variable bit rate. The best is to try it for yourself and see what level of quality you can live with.
