Farewell Sweet Lacey (poem)

Most of you probably know by now that I lost my beloved Lacey Tuesday night as she died in my arms at the vet. I wrote the following poem as part of my healing process which apparently is going to take a very long time.

Farewell Sweet Lacey

Tears are running down my cheeks, the pain is raw and deep. Your memory is haunting me so I can hardly sleep.

Your beds' still on the windowsill, your box still on the floor, I miss you softly mewing because you want out-of-doors.

You were never just an animal, you were pet, companion, friend. You've left me with a broken heart I pray that time will mend.

You were so sweet and precious, its so hard to say goodbye. Your heart was filled with love for me, I think of you and cry.

Nineteen years-two months we had, and I cherished each day so. Because I knew a day would come, when I had to let you go.

The life we shared is over now, I miss your sweet and loving face. I loved you so completely none could ever take your place.

I'd have gladly bore your suffering, because you were my friend. But, though your sufferings' over now, seems mine will never end.

I try to wipe the tears away, not dwell upon this pain. But you were such a part of me, life will never be the same.

Lacey, you've left an empty place, if only you hadn't died. Someday, not soon, I'll think of you, and no longer hurt and cry.

Your memory will never fade my love for you not cease. You'll be always in my heart With an angel may you sleep.

I am sorry for your loss. Isn't it interesting that many of our pets have better 'personalities' than many human beings we have to deal with? I think even though they pass away eventually (as we all must), we are lucky to be able to share our spaces and lives with such a loving companion.

I remember reading a book which mentioned that dog spelled backwards was God. The author reasoned that it was probably because dogs have the capacity to love us, irregardless of our faults.

Here's to you, Lacey . . . a GOOD dog.
