Is Round Mountain toast?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Are there any RMOCers out there who know if there is damage to their maps like Round Mtn. due to that Hayman fire? I couldn't find anything about it on the club website, but wondered if that's because noone has been able to check on it? Just curious. It would be too bad to lose nice terrain like Round Mountain is.

As near as I could tell on the USFS maps, the fire would have started along that new purple road (on the USGS 1:24000 map), perhaps 1km up Badger Gulch from the Lk. George - Tarryall Road.

The Round Mountain map is believed to be unaffected at this time, although the ignition point was down the slope, off the NE side of the mapped area. There are indications, however, that the forest service has burned a firebreak across the Lake George (Quartz Hill) map, perhaps following the power line, in case the fire gets that far. There is conflicting information as to whether the fire itself has reached the map.
