greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hi all,

Well, this is my first photos with my M6 & a Summicron 50mm (the new one..) Thanks to you all, for all the tips you gave me, I really appreciate (and understand :-), now I'm ready to take some pictures !

Best regards,

Ps: I didn't change the camera type on photo.net, It's from my M6, not the Hexar Af..

Good Stuff Simon! I like the tonal range, composition and the isolation of only the "meat" of the photos. Looks like you've stepped right into your M6 nicely! b~

This seems to point out my philosopy. With almost any other camera, you take pictures of reality as it, or as close as you can get. The Leica allows you to take photograph's of reality as you see it.

I like your shots Simon, well done!

Nice work Simon. Good eye!

Beauties!

Gotta love that 50, eh?

I'm impressed Simon. For the first pictures you have shown us very rigourous pictures.

You are right, the M is made for you and you are ready for it.

And with the 50mm!

I'm Bleu-Blanc-Rouge with Envy!

Regards. Xavier.

Simon! You ahve posted some beautiful photos here- thanks for sharing these with us! I am very impressed, especially for a first time M user- but you have been using a rangefinder before, with the Hexar- clearly you know what you are doing with this. As Xavier said, the M is certianly for you!

I especially love the one with the old lady descending the staris- you have a great eye for detail, composition, and the moment!

Keep enjoying yourself, and keep posting. Bravo!

nice images, Simon.

huh? any camera allows you to take photographs of reality as you see it...if you know how to.

Simon, you've made Moholy-Nagy proud. Nice work.

Glenn, there's a fine line between stupid and clever...

Simon, Very impressive for your "first photos" with the M6!!! - you should be rather pleased!!!!

Steve, there's also a fine line between ignorant and acute. Enjoy your bliss. It's pretty obvious to me, that this is Simon's eye, and the reality he sees. I certainly don't see this reality, and I doubt very much that either you or Dexter do. But you two can always post and prove me wrong. In any event, I think we can agree that Simon has posted some very strong images.

-- Glenn Travis (leicaddict@hotmail.com), June 08, 2002.

Glenn, what the hell are you talking about? i have no doubt in my mind that Simon could have captured those images or "reality as he sees it" even with a FM2n, OM4, T90, F5, 1v, or HEXAR and a 50mm lens.

your rant/saying/whatever about "reality as one sees it" and its alleged connection with the Leica M would give an impression that it's a smart remark--AT FIRST GLANCE--but when one really thinks about it, it's just UTTER NONSENSE...please...

-- Dexter Legaspi (dalegaspi@hotmail.com), June 08, 2002.

Simon, you definitely have a strong sense of design, but I don't see much narrative in your pictures. Nice snaps.

Dexter & the group;

With my Zorki3c and soviet optics I shoot negative reality; with my Leica M3 I shoot positive reality; with my Bessa R I shoot positive reality with a tad bit of positive reality error when using my lenses wide open..the longer baseline on the M3 gives one a better constancy in reality; Konica users must live with the small reality shift that occurs with their products...; when using Leica Lenses..

Leica measures its reality transfer factor; RTF ; on its lenses...Erwin Puts has the new curves in his books....

The de-reality areas of ones photos varies with different lens types..leica glass has good de-reality factor or Rokeh.......Good Rokeh means a smooth transfer of reality from the high reality areas to the non reality areas of the photo.................

Usage of Russian lenses on Leicas causes weird effects; the negative reality factor of these lenses bother alot of hardcore Leica users; which prefer the look of the positive reality Leica lenses....

Dante Stella and I have different opinions about the reality of the Russian lenses; but both agree that the Nikon LTM lenses from the 1950's have a neutral reality; that is why the 105mm F2.5 is such a good portrait lens................................ Kelly

Glenn, Ditto what Dexter said. You're philosophy is obtuse. It's obvious that Simon's "reality" or "vision" was developed well before he started thinking Leica. You're comment trivializes his ability by implying that it's the machine and not the photographer making the picture.

-- Steve Wiley (wiley@accesshub.net), June 08, 2002.

Yes you're right.. Camera don't take pictures !

BUT, I bought my M because it's silent and small, I think I'll not use a F100 for example (I bought a F100 6 month ago, and I sell it to get my M a week ago..) in the same way, with a M, I can be much closer to the subject, peoples think I'm a tourist with a small retro camera :-) For my personal use, there's no better camera ! I don't need a 70-200mm F/2.8 or a Ultrasonic 400mm F/2.8 either :-)

Best regards,

Marvelous, Simon. If I’d taken them, I would count the overheads (first and last in the series) as two of my best photos.
