Leica R3 CDS Cells

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hi, I've got a question to the R3 meter CDS-cell. As you know the cells of old Leicameter -will- die soon or later! But how about the cells of an R3? Will they also die ? Can it be repaiered?

Thanks for all postings! Cris

Yes it will eventually die but the question is "When?". My Leicaflex Standard and SL and SL2 CdS cells are still working well so I imagine your R3's cells still has some life left in 'em.

CdS cells are usually the most durable part of the meter circuitry (the exception being the ones used in Leicaflex standard and early SL's). As a rule it is the functional resistant element, or the circuit board itself which "goes" before the cell. That's unfortunate because those are almost always model-specific. A good repairman can often find substitutes for the CdS cells. Minolta cells work in Rollei 35S, cells from old Petri's work in Nikon Photomic finders, for example.
