What is a good starter (with room for improvement) flash for canon rebel 2000?

420EX.

I agree. The 420EX supports E-TTL, like the Rebel 2000. It also has full tilt/swivil capability like the 550EX. Your most likely camera upgrade would be the Elan 7, which also supports E-TTL and is matched very well with the 420EX (the 420 accomodates the Elan's 7 focusing points). The 420EX also works well with the EOS 3 should you choose a bigger step up. The bigger, more powerful, more expensive 550EX would be the better choice in this case, but could hardly be considered a starter flash.

Or a Sigma EF-500 Super. It's power & features are very much like a 550EX but cost's like a 420EX.
