What is happening with the forums.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

Photo.net is going to move the forum. They discovered some (unspecified) problem with the Oracle database, which is causing a delay. They assure me they will resume the forum moves as soon as they have everything configured properly.

I'm sure there will be further difficulties, but I believe we can remain a viable community. I have no clear idea how accounts will be handled. I already have an account with Photo.net, to read the Medium Format and Nature Photography forums, and I am assuming it will work for this forum as well, once it has been moved.

I will pass on any further information from Photo.net as soon as I receive it.

Thanks Ed for keeping us informed.

An idea: some of us changed email address (sometimes several times) so I don't think it is possible to automatically recognize that it is/was the same person. May be it makes sense if eveybody makes a list of email accounts he/she used in this forum and submit it to photo.net team (to an account specially made for this purpuses, in a specified format)? Then the script that convert this board to photo.net format will be able to properly merge the messages of everyone. Not a big deal, though. Just an idea.

-- I assume that, for example, my messsages from this board will be added to my messages in photo.net. If they won't -- please ignore this.

Ed, two more suggestion (rather for photo.net technical team):

1) There are cross references in the posts here. It would be nice to replace them with correct new URLs.

2) Some 3rd party sites store references to the messages of this board. I think it would be also nice to publich (somewhere in photo.net) the map "OldReference -> NewReference" for every topic or, even better, make a very simple search mashine for this purpose only.

Thank and best regards Andrey

Andrey - I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you, waiting for Photo.net to correct all the e-mail addresses, bad links, &tc in the old database. It's a great idea, but it's never going to happen.
