Ballistics data

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread

Does anybody know of any web sites where I can get ballistics data on rifles and/or pistols. Any reference would be good, but would also like some opinions on the .45-70 and the .375 H&H. With in the next couple of years I want to go to Alaska. Backpacking and hunting and Im looking at the marlin guide gun .45-70 (plus id use it on bear and other game around here too) or just any rifle in .375 H&H havent done that much research on it yet. I know my 06 is versatile enough but im curious about whether it has enough stopping power for quick kills on big dangerous game in close which is why im more leaning toward the .45-70. Thanks Jon

Well sir, that .06 is all you'll need if you can launch'em quick enough, and if you can hit what your pointin at,,,truth be known!!!

Go baby go! But not with the 30-odd-6. I felt very underarmed whilst baiting bear in Alberta back in -94. And that was with a stiff load of Norma MRP behind 220 RN Sierras. Today I would choose a .444, .45- 70 or .375, or something similar. Just think about the most of the hunting/carrying with thtat rifle youīll be doing. Then choose action type. I mean, there ainīt no .375H&H chambered in lever action rifles. But at the same time, itīs the best all-round cartridge of the above. Of course there are others, but of those mentioned itīs the best.

Another way to do this would be to rebarrel your 30-06 to .35 Whelen. It should work OK for anything but the most decisive bear. Nice chambering, really.

If you want to play around with loads/chamberings in an easy way goto www.norma.cc and discover their ballistic program. Simple, quite informative and easy to use. Just have a few BCīs in haīndy to feed the computer.
