Why did the original designer of the Golden Gate Bridge want to hide from his design?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

The statue of the man standing at the Golden Gate Bridge tour place was Joseph Strauss, but as I know, he was not the actual designer of the bridge. And facts have proven that Charles Ellis was the actual designer. I just want to ask, what are some of the proves Charles Ellis was the original designer? And why did Charles and his wife want to keep it as a secret?

P.S. Joseph Strauss stole the design!

The design and building of the bridge are the subject of James Van Der Zee's book "The Gate". Read it and find the answers to these sensational accusations!
