A good lense for close ups?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hello everyone. I have a Elan IIe and a 28-105II USM . The other day on my front porch there was a little nest of baby spidersand when I touched the nest the all went and scattered themselves... They were soo small and it would of made a neat picture. Anyways, it made me realize that maybe I should invest in one more lense that would be good for close ups on such objects. Im reading through websites and trying to find info on all the lenses but I thought I would ask for everyone elses input to (Ive gotton great advice here before ;) What about a Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens ?

Great choice, the only macro lens in existance that can edge it out is the $2,600 apo leica, and just barley at f 2.8. Not bad.good luck JC

Yes, the 100mm f/2.8 usm macro is excellent. A less expensive alternative might be a canon 250d close-up filter(lens).

i was thinking of just getting a close up lense. I do like price much better. I want somthing that will give me good results though. If anyone has experince with them I would love to hear about the results

You can also use extension tubes to do macro, they're more expensive than closeup filters but supposedly give better results since it doesn't introduce an optical element to degrade the image -- could be especially useful if you're going to try macro with a consumer zoom.

I use the 50 2.5 macro EF lens. You have to get closet than with the 100 but the 50 is a very sharp macro lens which can double as a normal 50. A bargain for $260 at Adorama.

Ashley, the top rated(for its price)in the 100mm macro is the vivitar 100mmf3.5 macro. Its only about $130US and is availible wholesale through popular photography. I have seen pictures from this lens and its sharp. Mechanically it wins no prizes, but it should serve your purpose(and budget) well. JC
