Has anyone ever had a screw mount Leica RF mirror resilvered?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I've got a little IIIf that I love. But the RF mirror has faded into oblivion. So I've pretty much used it like a Bessa L. That is to say, with wide angle lenses (though I do squint my way through using the RF for it's 50/2 Summitar also). But Alex's recent thread about the new LTM Rapidwinder has got me very interested in getting it working as it should again.

Stephen Gandy says on his repair page that he can fix LTM RF mirrors:

"Leica Screw Mount RF/VF Cleaning and Repair for 2nd RF Image $125 Please note this is a special repair which most people tell you can't be done."

Has anyone ever had this done by him or anyone else?

I had it done by Jon Maddox at L&J Leica repair in Greenville SC. That may be who Gandy subs them out to, I don't know. It took forever to get it back but the results were worth it. Jon also CLA's it (a IIIfBD) and a IIIa for me (oddly, the prewar mirrors seem to never fade) and changed the shutter curtains on it too (the rubber was getting tacky). Nice job but what a wait!

Not A hard job about 3/4 week turn round as have to send out the mirror roughfully $200 aus dollars for the job plus freight and packing + insurance.

To make one aware A proper strip and service is not cheep as it takes time to maintain Leica standard and that is where the cost lies not in the resilvering.

Any honest repair firm should be capable but check out in your contry
