New Nikon flash...a possibility for Leica Ms

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

For the last couple of days I've been testing my new Nikon SB-30 flash.

It should be perfect for M users, as it can be used in non-ttl, or full manual mode with 1/2 stop compensation up or down. The best part is that it's tiny...not much larger than holding 2 rolls of film...and costs around $100.00.

I don't have an M to test it on, but just thought I'd pass the info along for those of you looking for a small flash that's good for ocassional fill. It even has a built in diffuser for wide angles.

It's not really ttl is it? But I thought it would be ideal for M6 Classic users.

I was using a Nikon SB23 flash for my Leica M6. What I dislike the Nikon flash and M6 combination is that:
1. STBY function which I cannot turn it off. Tha flash will turn off automaticlly after xx second but the M6 shutter button won't turn it on automatically.
2. The Nikon flash's hot shoe contact is little too big and tight if mounted directly on the M6's hot shoe. Beyond that the Nikon flash curcuit may not compatible with M6ttl. I am using on my M6 classic only.
Also SB30 uses non-AA battery which is mimus and lacks the PC cord connetion.

Actually, it looks like it is meant to be used as a fill flash for pro Nikons. High time somebody introduced one of these, but it is pricey (but not as much as the Leica SF20). For Leicas one might as well get the purpose built SF20.

Yeah, Mani, that's what I use it for. It's great on the FM3a, mainly because the FM3a has the button for an instant 1 stop decrease in output.

I just pass it along as another choice for you non-ttl users. It's roughy 1/3 smaller and lighter than the Leica...it fits in your shirt pocket...and it's half the price.

By the way, the Leica uses non-AA batteries, also.

Jim, I use a Leica CF flash which is designed for the Minilux with M6 and F3HP. It is very compact, not especially powerful but adequate with more sensitive films, and the batteries go and go, just like the bunny. That being said, I like natural light photography best. Good shooting
