Actually it was his short works that created and sustained his career and fame. He had published some short stories before his breakthrough contest win for "Ms. Found in a Bottle." His biting literary reviews, "The Raven" and his mysteries("The Gold Bug") really catapulted his fame. Anthologies of his tales were popular but his only long books were financial disasters. (Pym and Eureka).

"The Raven" was the most wildly successful American poem then or since and came rather late on in his career and life.
