How does one go about determining which diopter attachment is the correct one for uncorrected eyesight?

You should be able to get your prescription from your eye doctor in a figure of a "minus or plus" diopter. The Leica M's seem to have a bit of "minus" built into the system, as a Minus .75 works for me and I need a Minus 2 with my other cameras. You would need to factor in this Minus 1 or so into the strength you need based on your prescription. Minus diopters are for near sighted folks, and plus ones for those who are far sighted. In the old days, we used to have a display from Nikon at the camera shop I worked in that had all the available diopters for people to look through them and pick out the one that seemed the best. That method is probably still the best way to get the right one, but it seems most dealers never have a good selection of the diopters in stock to try them out these days.
