I shoot nature with Minolta and am trying to decide between the Sigma 400 5.6 macro, which has been widely praised as an excellent lens, and a Sigma or Minolta 300 f/4 lens. I always need more reach for birds and my dilemma is whether to take the greater versatility of the 300 f/4 (which would also give me 420mm f5.6 and 600mm f8 with 1.4x and 2x TCs) or not risk the sharpness loss with a 2x and settle for 560mm f8 with the Sigma 400 + 1.4x TC. I guess my question boils down to whether anyone has experience with how sharp a Minolta or Sigma 300 f4 lens is with a 2X TC?
