Women- Mrs. Stanard especially encouraged the young Poe to write.(To Helen)Then other true loves etc. Personal loneliness and losses. Dreams(see poems with "dream" in the name). Literary studies of the Romantics and classics. (Byron, Shelley, Coleridge, etc.)

I think he was influenced by the work of Charles Dickens, they met when Poe guessed the ending to Dickens book which was being published by chapter in the paper. He tried to get Dickens to get his work published in London; however, he was unable to.

I think that E.A.P. was inspired by the many sufferings from the loss of loved ones and women in his life. He was heartbroken way too many times and was inspired by the memories of the ones who went before him. He was obviously amused by death and wanted to have a way to remember and captivate his feelings for lost loved ones.
