What is a Victorian Clapper ( buried alive?)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

I am doing a presentation on a bell called a clapper. It was placed on a pole beside a toombstone where a string attached would run underground into the air vent and be attached to the corps's finger. It is believed that if they were still alive when they were buried they would move their finger and the bell would ring. I need more information on this please!!!!!!!! A lot of it !!!!

You have enough information on the subject of the so-called "Death Bell" it was tied to people's index finger when they were buried because they couldn't tell if people were alive or dead in the old days because they didn't have much medicinal knowledge. So when people were buried they tied the bell onto them and had a night guard sit in the graveyard and dig up the person if they were still alive.
